Riikka Hakola is one of the leading sopranos in Finland. She studied singing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and privately in London, Vienna, New York and Milan.

Ms. Hakola won the First Prize at the Kangasniemi competition in 1987. Her debut at the Finnish National Opera took place in 1990 as Donizetti’s LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR. Her repertoire encompasses more than 40 major roles including Violetta in LA TRAVIATA (the role she has performed in 10 countries), ANNA BOLENA, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, COSI FAN TUTTE, DON GIOVANNI, L’ELISIR D’AMORE, ARABELLA, I CAPULETTI ED I MONTECCHI, etc.

In addition to her many performances in Finland, Ms. Hakola has also appeared in concerts and operas in the United States, England, Germany, France, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldavia, Russia, Brazil, China, Macao and Singapore.

It was at the Frankfurt Opera in NIXON IN CHINA conducted by the composer John Adams that Riikka appeared to great acclaim. She has also appeared to great reviews as Violetta in LA TRAVIATA e.g. at the Finnish National Opera, the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow, the Stockholm and Copenhagen Royal Operas and the National Opera of Oslo. The role of Donna Anna in DON GIOVANNI brought her to several international opera houses such as the Bonn Opera, Kiev and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. Moreover, Ms. Hakola has made guest appearances in Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Tallinn opera houses and several festivals like Garsington Opera Festival in the UK, Macao Opera Festival and Savonlinna Opera Festival.

In 1999 she made her American debut as Donna Anna with the Baltimore Opera Company and in 2002 she joined the Metropolitan Opera for Natasha in WAR AND PEACE. It was in 2003 that she appeared again as Donna Anna, this time with the Washington Opera Company. In December 2003 Ms.Hakola was invited to sing a concert with Mr. Placido Domingo at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, which became a great success.

Riikka has sung in the world premiers of many contemporary Finnish operas, such as the role of Hilda in Rautavaara’s opera ALEKSIS KIVI at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as well as the title role of FRIEDA by Tikka and the role of Onerva in THE KNIFE by Heininen.

She played the leading role of Jenny in Kurt Weill’s MAHAGONNY, Eurydike in ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD and the First Nymph in Linkola’s ANGELIKA – all of these were recorded for Finnish Television. Riikka has also made several short films in Finland.

Her repertoire also contains a great variety of pieces for solo recitals with both piano and orchestra. Many of the contemporary works were specially written for her.
